Rich tapestry: highlights of Central Asian contemporary art revisited
Rich tapestry: highlights of Central Asian contemporary art revisited
Over the last decade Central Asian art’s place in the landscape of contemporary art has become increasingly more visible, finding a place at the Venice Biennale and being represented at the 2014 Art Dubai fair. In 2011, Calvert 22 staged Between Heaven and Earth: Contemporary Art from Central Asia. Curated by David Elliott, the exhibition contributed to a growing interest in the region and its cultural output. As Elliott discusses his experience of putting together the show on 3 December at London's Dash Arts, we look back at some of its most memorable works.
Erbossyn Meldibekov
Erbossyn Meldibekov’s work plays with stereotypes that surround Central Asia and turns them into preposterous images. His Plates (2009) series takes the form of ceramics, objects for which Central Asia is famous around the world, embellished with deliberately vague images that are superficially associated with the region. Hailing from Kazakhstan, Meldibekov’s plates are adorned with images of camels, rudimentary technology, weapons and vast desert lands — referring not to specific countries but to a vast undifferentiated region. As the clichés pile up, the more absurd this image of Central Asia becomes. We may be none the wiser about what it is like from Meldibekov’s work, but we can see how poor our common understanding of it currently is.

One of the highlights of the auction is Simon Hantaï's dazzling work mb2 (Mariale) , one of only 27 works from his Mariale series that incorporates – in diverse colours – the folding technique invented by the artist. Following the world record set for the artist in our June sale in Paris, Kazuo Shiraga, the founder of the Gutaï movement, will be represented by a work from 1961, exceptional in both its date and quality. The work, painted a year before Shiraga's first exhibition outside Japan at the Stadler gallery in Paris and whose title evokes the heroes of Chinese epic poetry, is part of the artist's most sought-after corpus. With its dynamic colour, Ladies and Gentlemen (Wilhemina Ross) is exemplary of Andy Warhol's characteristic method of elevating an underground subject to the level of iconic pop. Executed in 1975, this canvas of 127 x 101.5 cm was painted by Warhol from polaroid photos of transvestites posing in his studio.
Executed circa 1947, a yellow, red, white and black mobile by Alexander Calder is a particularly concrete example of what sets the artist apart as one the greatest inventors and enchanters of the 20th century: three dimensional abstraction and moving poetry. François-Xavier Lalanne's Gorille de sûreté II is one of the most spectacular works from the artist's fantastic and joyful bestiary where the potential function (the safe) is integrated in the most unusual way.

Who did the Whitney Museum pick to sing them sweetly out of the Breuer building? New wave rock ‘n’ roll legend Elvis Costello.
He was the performer at the annual Whitney Gala, the last one ever to take place in the 1966 Marcel Breuer brutalist masterpiece that’s been the Whitney Museum of American Art’s home for decades.
Costello, looking disheveled and somewhat fabulously like a cross between Weegee and the farmer in Grant Wood’s American Gothic, took the stage after a dessert of chestnut floating islands and a dinner of nostalgia. Each table was labelled with a year and an art movement, and the walls and lanterns were covered in artist’s names, too few female, although ones like “YOKO,” an honoree of the evening, were made extra-big as if print size made up for curatorial oversight.
The Whitney moves to a much larger Hudson River-side spot in the meatpacking district in 2015. May 1 is the opening day for its Renzo Piano-designed headquarters, it was announced at the Gala last night. (Meanwhile, it’s renting the Breuer building out to the Metropolitan Museum of Art for eight years.)
The Whitney Gala is known for its luxury-goods sponsors (this year, Louis Vuitton) and its star performers. Over the years they’ve included Gloria Gaynor, Lou Reed, David Byrne and, now, Costello.
He joked (we hope) about being told to sing only hits, and complained he never really had any, then segued into one: “Every Day I Write the Book.” (Even the swells were filming with their iPhones.) “Alison” followed, and then a fierce, loud, mean guitar strum to “(What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding.”
Whitney director Adam Weinberg (who’s been on a fund-raising tear for the new

They began with a single roll of tape, frenetically navigating the space between columns with the help of a ladder and a lot of creativity. Ten days and twelve sets of hands later, Tape Paris was completed at Palais de Tokyo for ‘Inside,’ an exhibition of site-specific projects designed to be interactive and introspective. Tape Paris delves into the physical and psychological experience of interior space through an experiential model of exploration. Visitors travel through a matrix of elastic tunnels suspended precariously above the traditional exhibition space, as guests observe their movements from below. The biomorphic skin is a playground for the senses, offering opportunities to climb, relax, and discover.
